The Look. The GCLL997 on offer today takes a more traditional approach to the moonphase complication - but with the sort of Credor twist I love. And while the overall look is undeniably minimalist, there are a few subtle details that could easily be missed.

The Design. The façade of the watch is impressively texture-forward. The entire dial carries a fine silver sunburst finish, while four hand-polished indices sit atop a raised outer ridge. The central subsection houses the applied yama (山) crest and a power-reserve indicator that straddles both levels. The indicator itself is double-recessed and framed in a metal trim - not the sort of detail you’ll notice until it twinkles at you in the sunlight. 

The Moon. And then there’s the moonphase. A perfectly executed mother-of-pearl moon glides through a sunken aperture, shifting between silver, green, blue, and purple based on your viewing angle. Alongside the blued hands, it’s the only splash of colour on the entire watch - and neither element falters under that pressure.

The Complication. Despite Grand Seiko’s broad catalogue, they’ve never been blessed with the Moonphase Spring Drive - that sole honour belongs to Credor (and one Seiko branded watch). While the movement isn’t technically retired, it’s been almost ten years since the last moonphase release - I’m hoping 2026 will add a new one to Credor’s lineup. 

The Balance. It strikes a masterful balance. Its Moonphase and Power Reserve indicators are tastefully understated, ensuring the twinkling, zaratsu-polished indices, hands, and case remain the stars of the show. 

Condition: In great condition. No noticeable marks of any significance. Original strap and buckle.
