Year Produced: 1993
The Origin. Released in 1993, Citizen’s 7400 was the world’s first radio-controlled analogue watch. Not only was it a technical milestone, it looked beautifully strange doing it. During the design phase, Citizen encountered a serious problem - the metal parts of the movement would sometimes block the radio signal. The solution? Elevate the antenna above the movement and all of its signal blocking parts.
The Functionality. The result is striking. It might look like the antenna sits above the crystal, but it’s actually buried inside it, giving the watch its distinct look. But it’s not just an unusual face - there’s a 12/24-hour subdial, as well as a time zone selector that gives the watch GMT functionality, and a push-activated calendar.
The How. Once per day (at different times depending on the day of the week), the watch will check for Atomic Clock Radio Waves. If you’re within 800km of an appropriate tower the watch can automatically adjust the time to be correct to the second. By pressing a combination of buttons, you can also make the watch manually confirm the time using radio waves whenever convenient. Thanks to modern technology, you can use your phone to spoof radio signals if you don’t live close enough to a radio transmitter.
Condition: In very good condition overall. A series of scratches can be seen across the crystal and caseback. Fits up to a 6.9 inch wrist.
