Native to Cape Verde off the coast of West Africa, black lotus is a rare ornamental shrub with inky black and deep burgundy flowers. This sun-loving plant thrives in the ground or containers, unlike the more commonly known aquatic lotus which grows in bodies of water. Adaptable and resilient, black lotus flourishes in harsh coastal conditions, even where other plants struggle. It fixes nitrogen in soil, improving soil health. Spanish cuisine makes use of its leaves in salads, and it is known for its anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties in traditional medicine.
