It combines two active ingredients: Acefylline Piperazine — a xanthine derivative bronchodilator — and Diphenhydramine — a first-generation antihistamine with anticholinergic properties that reduces bronchial secretions. Together, these agents address bronchospasm and the secretory component of cough associated with allergic and infectious respiratory conditions.
Acefylline Piperazine is a theophylline-related compound that inhibits phosphodiesterase, raising intracellular cAMP levels in bronchial smooth muscle cells. This causes relaxation of airway smooth muscle, dilation of bronchi, and improved airflow — particularly useful in bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive airway disease. Diphenhydramine blocks H1 histamine receptors, reducing histamine-mediated bronchoconstriction, sneezing, rhinorrhoea, and urticaria, while its anticholinergic action dries excessive bronchial secretions to ease productive cough. For related respiratory products, visit our prescription medicines collection.
Acefyl is prescribed for: bronchial asthma with productive or allergic cough; acute and chronic bronchitis; allergic cough with rhinitis or sneezing; upper respiratory tract infections with bronchospasm; and cough with excessive mucus secretions. Prescription required — use only under medical supervision. For cough lozenges and OTC respiratory products, see our cough and cold collection.
Adults: 10–20ml three times daily after meals, or as prescribed by your doctor. Children: dosage is weight and age dependent — follow your doctor's specific instructions and use the provided measuring cup. Shake the bottle well before each use. Do not exceed the prescribed dose. Diphenhydramine causes drowsiness — avoid driving, operating machinery, or alcohol consumption during treatment. Prescription required before dispensing.
Common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, urinary retention (anticholinergic from Diphenhydramine), and mild nausea or stomach upset. Acefylline may cause palpitations, headache, or tremor at higher doses. Report any chest pain, severe palpitations, difficulty urinating, or allergic reactions to your doctor immediately.
Use with caution in patients with peptic ulcer disease, cardiac arrhythmias, glaucoma, benign prostatic hyperplasia, or epilepsy. Diphenhydramine is contraindicated in neonates and should be used cautiously in elderly patients who are prone to falls from sedation. Avoid in patients taking MAO inhibitors. Not recommended in early pregnancy without specialist advice. Inform your doctor of all current medications. Keep out of reach of children.
Q: Does Acefyl Cough Syrup cause drowsiness?
A: Yes — Diphenhydramine is a sedating antihistamine. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or drinking alcohol while taking Acefyl Syrup.
Q: Is Acefyl suitable for children?
A: Acefyl can be used in children under medical supervision with age-appropriate dosing. Never administer Diphenhydramine-containing products to infants under 2 years without a doctor's prescription.
Q: How quickly does Acefyl Syrup work?
A: Bronchodilator and antihistamine effects typically begin within 30–60 minutes of an oral dose. Consistent use as prescribed provides sustained relief of bronchospasm and allergic symptoms.
